From The Top: An update from Neil
Welcome to our latest CityLinked newsletter and I wish you all the best for the holiday season. I hope you have your Christmas plans sorted and are looking forward to a well-deserved break with friends and family.
To our existing customers, we'd like to say thanks for your business over the past year. We look forward to an exciting year ahead.
It feels like Christmas seems to start earlier every year. I'm sure retailers wish every month was a Christmas gold rush, but just because decorations are in the shops by early October, that doesn't mean it's December just yet! My point here is that we all need to (re)invent our own business futures as best we can and challenge ourselves to keep offering relevant products and services for our customers.
CityLink is no different. Right now, we have a significant network renewal project underway which will enhance our service offering. We are nearing the exciting phase of launching a range of new ‘hi-fibre' products and services and your feedback on these is vital. You can read more about this in this issue of CityLinked, or call us on 0800 CITYLINK (0800 424 895) to find out more.
By now you will have read something of the latest Government plans for ‘Fibre to the Home' and regional local fibre companies. CityLink is exploring what this could mean for us all, and this will hopefully be a part of CityLink's exciting year ahead.
Merry Christmas from everyone at CityLink.
Get More Fibre in Your Broadband Diet
While the health benefits of fibre in our diets are well known, there’s also a proven benefit from adding fibre to your broadband services – which is why CityLink is bringing more fibre directly to your business! All new installations of CityLink’s high-speed Ethernet services - PrivateLAN, PublicLAN and ExchangeNET - will be delivered right into our customers’ offices by optical fibre. This will mean that these services will:
- Have enhanced reliability, because services travel on a dedicated ‘light path’ right from your office to CityLink’s network core, with no intervening equipment that can affect your services.
- Provide great service performance, because fibre optics are immune to outside interference, unlike services such as DSL, which interfere with one another and degrade service quality.
- Be easily upgradeable to meet your growing and changing requirements. Compared with almost all other types of broadband, fibre optics, have almost unlimited capability.
Fibre to the business will boost PrivateLAN networks linking multiple offices in the CBD, PublicLAN services delivering high-speed symmetric Internet access and ExchangeNET for superior interconnection between New Zealand’s Internet communities.
To date, all of CityLink’s Ethernet services have been delivered to the building by fibre optics and then the last few metres, typically from CityLink’s switch in the common services room to the customers’ floor, are transported over cat-5e. Now these services will by-pass the building switch, and any other intermediate network sites, with a dedicated optical connection between our customers’ premise and CityLink’s core network switches.
This new method of service delivery comes with a more comprehensive Service Level Agreement and some new very-high service availability options.
To find out more about these services or to order an upgrade of your existing services, please contact your Account Manager, email sales@citylink.co.nz or call us on 0800 4 CITYLINK (0800 424 895).
FX Networks and CityLink: A Perfect Match
In 2004, the founder of FX Networks decided ‘enough was enough’ and there was a desperate need for more competition in the tele-communications marketplace. So FX Networks was born, with staff camping in one of CityLink’s spare offices.
Since then, they have laid over 2000 kilometres of fibre around New Zealand, grown from $0 to $25M turnover in five years and picked up some major telecommunications customers throughout the country, including Weta Digital, TVNZ, Transpower and many government agencies.
Jamie Baddeley, General Manager – Sales, sees FX Networks as the national network cousin to CityLink, working in partnership to deliver fast, affordable, reliable, simple and transparent services to their clients.
“We are the first commercially-available independent 10Gbps intercity light path provider in New Zealand, delivering high-performance internet and private networking services to businesses, government agencies and the ISP industry,” says Jamie. “We’ve been working with CityLink since the beginning and we’re a great team. We have the same philosophy about how our businesses should run and we’re here to take the complexity out of telecommunications, providing a simple robust solution.”
FX Networks are the first partner to use CityLink’s ‘fibre to the customer’ PrivateLAN services, which gives their customers highly improved overall reliability of their networks on a dedicated ‘light path’, which avoids interference from other equipment.
“CityLink provide high performance, flexible pipes all around Wellington and we use them to connect all of our government agencies,” says Jamie. “It so happens that Government like working with CityLink too, which has been very useful.”
“Our businesses compliment each other and we look forward to many years working together in the future,” says Jamie. “It’s a positive two-way relationship and you can’t ask for better than that in business.”
Tech Talk: Wellington CBD switched on and ready for action
Together with our channel partners and our visionary customers, we have created the fastest and most connected Central Business District in the country. And now the infrastructure underpinning Wellington’s competitive advantage is getting a whole lot more capability.
At the heart of the changes is the addition of new Cisco 7600 carrier-grade Ethernet switches in our network core. These devices, equipped with high-density optical interfaces, are strengthening our 10Gbps core and significantly growing our 1Gbps optical connections to building switches and directly to customers.
In conjunction with the new core Ethernet switches, we are upgrading Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) and installing diesel generators, where required, to ensure we have secure electrical power in all core switching nodes.
A multi-year programme is now in place to install a direct optical connection between CityLink’s new core switching platform and the hundreds of building switches throughout the Wellington CBD. This activity simplifies our network architecture and increases network robustness.
Finally, we are also adopting the very latest model Cisco Ethernet access switches that will allow us to offer service functionality defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF).
The result of all these upgrades are new services with greater performance, additional functions and increased reliability. To find out more, see the article ‘Get More Fibre in your Broadband Diet’ in this issue.
We are very proud of these network upgrades that will provide the platform for CityLink to continue to deliver innovative services to our customers for the next 15 years and beyond.
