From the top: An update from Brianbrian

Welcome to the final edition of our newsletter for 2010.

It’s been an exciting year for us here at CityLink and we look forward to working with you throughout 2011.

As the year comes to a close it is pleasing to see that the business hesitations of the last two years have definitely lifted. In the last three months especially we have been extremely busy responding to a raft of new customer orders – thank you!

In this edition we introduce you to our exciting new product - Ultra 1G – and shed some light on just what our fleet of vans gets up to around the city.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and safe holiday travels.

Introducing - Ultra 1G

CityLink has always been about shifting the limits.

But when it comes to providing real and truly affordable ultra-fast networking, we’ve decided to remove limits – by introducing Ultra 1G

Ponder this…

  1. Why should the network company constrain your ability to use more speed when you need it?
  2. Why should you be charged for the maximum level of speed capacity when you only very rarely use the maximum capacity?

A large international business survey conducted recently has shown that companies think restricted network bandwidth is like having 'shackles' on their companies.

With Ultra 1G, we’ve broken those shackles.

Simply stated:

  • 1 gigabit/second fibre optic network link
  • Fully symmetric (1 gigabit/sec UP – 1 gigabit/sec DOWN)
  • Dedicated full capacity 1 gigabit/sec fibre optic circuit links (no bandwidth sharing)
  • No rate limiting
  • Utilisation level-based charging (monthly 95th percentile utilisation).

What does this all mean?

CityLink is introducing another transformational product into the New Zealand Open Access broadband market. The Ultra 1G service delivers unconstrained fibre optic networking with charges based on the actual usage levels. This makes it truly affordable for anyone who wants real ultra-fast fibre optic speed today but is just not willing to pay high rates for fixed maximum limits.

How does it work?

We know that most modern network traffic occurs in bursts of packets being sent over the network.

Firstly, this means that if the speed of the network link is higher, these bursts of traffic take less time for delivery. The simultaneous consequence is that faster links allow you to transfer more in the same period of time. You get more done, faster.

Secondly, there are time periods where there is little or no actual use of the link. So the charging approach that Ultra 1G takes is to use a formula for calculating the level of overall utilisation based on a continuous series of statistics taken directly from the fibre optic link. At the end of the month, the result from the calculation of this formula using these statistics determines the overall cost of service use for that month. This should be familiar since it is very similar to how we typically pay for electricity - you decide how much electricity you use and then your monthly bill is based on that usage.

Ultra 1G makes a transformational shift for the broadband market by giving you the freedom to determine your capacity needs rather than the telecommunications supplier constricting you to their limits. Then Ultra 1G is charged based on your actual usage. In reality it is all quite simple but for the traditional network market Ultra 1G is revolutionary.

In summary, Ultra 1G unshackles you from the traditional network service constraints of arbitrary speed limits and maximum level-based prices. It delivers the uncompromised benefits of fibre optics network speed with a pricing approach that makes it affordable to you.

Team Member Profile – Russell Carter, Senior OSP Technician

RCarter

If you’ve ever wondered what our CityLink vans are up to when they’re out and about on the road, just ask Russell Carter, or ‘Rodney’ as he’s more commonly known. He hails from West London and sounds not dissimilar to the character from ‘Only Fools and Horses’, but much better looking!

Russell is one of six Senior OSP Technicians or ‘Cable Monkeys’ who spend the majority of their days setting up new connections, splicing fibre optic cables, testing junctions and pretty much making sure the cable is live and working throughout the Wellington CBD.

And with Russell’s 15 years’ experience working for British Telecom in London, we know we’re in good hands.

The actual physical fibre optic cables are installed in many different ways around the city. You can find them under a manhole in the ground, in a box on the outside of a building or piggy backing on the Metlink trolley bus cables overhead. Have a look up next time you’re walking down Lambton Quay – the black cable is one of ours!

Russell and his colleagues are a great team of guys, who work really well together in a sometimes very pressured environment.

“We all have our own jobs to work on but we keep an eye on each other’s progress and help each other out whenever it’s needed,” says Russell. “Most of us work in isolation so it’s good to mix it up a bit.”

When Russell isn’t doing what he does best for CityLink, he’s either focusing on his other passion – music – or spending time with his partner and three daughters.

Thanks for helping us celebrate our birthday

Thanks to everyone who came along to our 15th birthday celebrations.

Speakers included long-time CityLink supporters Hon Maurice Williamson and Fran Wilde and our newly appointed Mayoress, Celia Wade-Brown, who made her first official, albeit ‘off the cuff’, public address as Mayor of Wellington.

Also speaking were Jon MacDonald, CEO of TradeMe, and Rod Drury, CEO/founder of Xero, who both spoke highly of the services they have received from CityLink and shared their excitement and anticipation about our collective ICT industry and the importance of high-speed ubiquitous connectivity. Bring on CityLink’s new Ultra 1G service!
