Regional fibre group adopts national technical standards

23 September 2009

The New Zealand Regional Fibre Group (NZRFG) has adopted a set of technical and service standards to ensure consistency in the national roll out of fibre optic networks.

Steve Fuller Chief Executive of Enable Networks said the group had been aware from the outset that there needed to be compatibility of services across the different networks and regions of the NZRFG members.

"To deliver a nationally integrated solution we believe it is essential to develop specifications to underpin all products delivered across the fibre network - irrespective of which region the network is operating.

"While certainly there are different regional operators and different methods of deploying fibre this should not impact on the customer experience."

Mr Fuller said the standards are based on definitions from the Metro Ethernet Forum and conform with the OFCOM Ethernet Active Line Access service principles. They are also in line with international best practice for layer 2 open access products on Next Generation Networks.

Mr Fuller said that the NZRFG would be happy to work with the wider industry to determine nationally consistent standards to achieve the government's vision of ultra fast broadband for New Zealanders.
