Stuff goes direct to WIX

16 February 2005

Fairfax Interactive's Stuff website is now peering directly with the Wellington Internet Exchange.

Stuff is managed by Wellington's Catalyst IT firm. Technical director Andrew McMillan says the move from a 10Mbit/s link with TelstraClear was made because the speed of the link was limiting performance of the site. "Peering with WIX is something that has been desirable for quite a while. In the past traffic had to go into TelstraClear's network to get to Stuff. Now for people who are peering on the WIX it doesn't."

McMillan says the big difference has been that the bandwidth has increased and customers of those ISPs that are on WIX will get a quicker response. "It makes straightforward business sense to peer on WIX because they don’t have to buy as much bandwidth. It also reduces the dependency on a single ISP." Traffic that cannot be routed through the WIX is going through AT&T.
